Hal Jordan is one of the most iconic members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force that maintains order throughout the universe. As the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, which includes Earth, Hal wields one of the most powerful weapons in existence: a power ring fueled by willpower itself. Born a test pilot with nerves of steel and an unshakeable determination, Hal Jordan has become known throughout the DC Universe as a hero capable of overcoming great fear. His journey has taken him from the skies of Earth to the far reaches of space, where he serves as both a defender of his home planet and a representative of humanity among the stars.
Hal Jordan's life changed forever when he was chosen by a dying alien named Abin Sur to become his successor as Green Lantern. Abin Sur, mortally wounded after crash-landing on Earth, commanded his power ring to find someone with the ability to overcome great fear. The ring selected Hal Jordan, a fearless test pilot for Ferris Aircraft, and transported him to the crash site. There, Abin Sur bestowed the ring and power battery upon Hal, making him the newest member of the Green Lantern Corps. Hal was then summoned to the planet Oa, home of the Guardians of the Universe, ancient beings who created the Corps to enforce order across the cosmos. Under the guidance of the Guardians and his mentor Sinestro, Hal learned to harness the power of his ring and began his career as an intergalactic lawman.
The Green Lantern power ring is limited only by the user's imagination and willpower, making it one of the most versatile weapons in existence. Hal's primary ability is creating energy constructs, manifesting solid light projections of anything he can imagine, from simple shields and weapons to complex machinery. His combat effectiveness is further enhanced by his ability to generate protective force fields that can withstand tremendous damage and devastating energy blasts capable of threatening even the most powerful adversaries. The ring grants Hal the power of space flight, allowing him to travel between planets and solar systems at incredible speeds, as well as standard atmospheric flight for terrestrial operations. His ring also provides enhanced durability, protecting him from physical harm and allowing him to survive in hostile environments including the vacuum of space. As a former test pilot, Hal possesses peak human intelligence and tactical thinking, skills that serve him well when facing threats that require more than raw power to overcome.
Throughout his career, Hal Jordan has formed significant relationships that have shaped his journey as a hero. His most notable romantic interest is Carol Ferris, his former boss at Ferris Aircraft, whose complicated relationship with Hal has been further complicated by her alter ego as Star Sapphire. Within the Green Lantern Corps, Hal has served alongside numerous fellow Lanterns, including his successors John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner, with whom he shares the duty of protecting Earth. He is a founding member of the Justice League, fighting alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and other legendary heroes. Among his greatest adversaries is Sinestro, his former mentor who fell from grace and became one of his most dangerous enemies, founding the Sinestro Corps to oppose the Green Lanterns with fear-based yellow power rings.
Hal Jordan stands as one of DC Comics' most enduring and important characters, helping to usher in the Silver Age of comics when he debuted in 1959. His concept of a hero whose power comes from willpower itself has resonated with readers for generations, making him a symbol of human potential and determination. The Green Lantern mythology that expanded around Hal has become one of the richest in superhero comics, introducing concepts like the emotional spectrum and multiple Lantern Corps that have influenced countless stories. Despite periods where other characters have taken up the Green Lantern mantle, Hal Jordan remains the definitive Green Lantern to many fans, representing the ideal of an ordinary human chosen for extraordinary purpose who proves worthy of that responsibility time and again.
