Metamorpho, the Element Man, stands as one of DC Comics' most visually distinctive and scientifically unique heroes. Created by writer Bob Haggard and artist Ramona Fradon, first appearing in The Brave and the Bold #57 in 1965, Metamorpho possesses the extraordinary ability to transform his body into any element or combination of elements found in the human body. His appearance is equally striking, with a divided color scheme that visually represents his elemental nature. Despite his incredible powers, Metamorpho's story is fundamentally tragic, as he constantly seeks a cure for his condition while reluctantly embracing his role as a superhero.
Rex Mason was a skilled soldier of fortune and adventurer working for wealthy industrialist Simon Stagg. While on an expedition in Egypt to retrieve the legendary Orb of Ra, Mason was betrayed by Stagg's brutish assistant Java, who left him trapped inside the pyramid. Exposure to the mystical energies of the Orb of Ra combined with radioactive meteor fragments transformed Mason at the molecular level, granting him control over the elements that comprise the human body. The transformation left him with a physically altered appearance and seemingly permanent elemental powers. Rather than embrace his new abilities, Mason initially viewed them as a curse, desperately seeking a way to return to normal human form.
Metamorpho's primary ability is his superhuman level metamorphosis, allowing him to reshape his body into virtually any form or configuration he can imagine. His elemental form powers enable him to transform any part of his body into different elements and chemical compounds, including gases, liquids, and solids, limited only to elements naturally found in the human body. This includes oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and trace elements. His transmutation abilities extend to creating complex chemical reactions and compound structures, giving him remarkable versatility in combat and problem-solving situations. These transformative powers grant him exceptional durability, as conventional attacks often pass harmlessly through gaseous forms or bounce off hardened elemental structures.
Beyond his signature elemental abilities, Metamorpho possesses superhuman strength when properly configured, capable of forming dense molecular structures or creating powerful chemical reactions to enhance his physical output. His regeneration capabilities allow him to recover from injuries by reconstituting his elemental form, though not quite at superhuman levels. His intelligence, while peak human rather than superhuman, allows him to effectively strategize creative applications of his powers and understand the chemical principles governing his transformations.
Rex Mason's relationship with Simon Stagg has remained complicated throughout his career, as the industrialist who employed him also indirectly caused his transformation. Stagg's daughter, Sapphire Stagg, became Rex's primary love interest and eventual wife, providing emotional grounding despite his monstrous appearance. The brutish Java, Stagg's faithful servant, harbors romantic feelings for Sapphire, creating an ongoing rivalry with Metamorpho. Rex has served with various superhero teams, most notably the Outsiders alongside Batman, and has worked with the Justice League on multiple occasions. His team affiliations often emphasize his outsider status, as he remains someone who never fully embraced the superhero identity despite his heroic actions.
Metamorpho represents a unique addition to the superhero genre, embodying the reluctant hero archetype decades before it became commonplace. His visual design, particularly his split-colored appearance and ever-changing form, influenced subsequent shape-changing characters in comics. The character's blend of science fiction and mysticism, combining ancient Egyptian mythology with atomic-age transformation, captured the imaginative spirit of Silver Age comics. While never achieving the mainstream recognition of DC's flagship heroes, Metamorpho has maintained a devoted fan following and remains a valued team player in ensemble casts, his powers providing creative solutions that more conventional heroes cannot achieve.
